Need a little bit of mercy? Let’s explore the apple: God’s crunchy, sweet, tart, crisp masterpiece. He made this fruit with so much love. They’re a good source of fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants.
But did you know that there are more than 7,500 varieties of apples worldwide? Here in the States, we most commonly see varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or my personal favorite, McIntosh.
Regardless of which type of apple you like the most, they’re easy to add to your meals for a bit of extra fiber. I know we’ve all heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” This saying originated in Wales in the 1800s to encourage people to eat healthy foods regularly to support good health.
Depending on your personal needs and food tolerance levels, adding apples, or any of your preferred fruits, in moderation could be beneficial to your overall health.
One of my favorite ways to add apples to my daily diet is simply to slice one and have it with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter for a snack.
Another way is to add it to a smoothie. The apple gives the smoothie a nice, fragrant taste.
Here’s the recipe
1 cup of blueberries 1 whole green apple 1 banana 2 slices of ginger Add water to desired consistency (I prefer 1 cup) Add a few cubes of ice
Blend until you have love in a cup.
For an extra dose of love and antioxidants, you could add açaí as well. Look for this in your frozen food section. Some brands have extra added sugar, so be mindful if you’re watching your sugar intake or if your gut is sensitive to sugar additives. You can also find the powder in a health food store. Don’t add more than 1 to 2 tablespoons to your smoothie. A little goes a long way.
I don’t add sweeteners to my smoothies, but if you’d like a little bit of sweetness, add a little agave, honey, or even coconut water. However, I recommend tasting it before you do so you’ll know what’s actually enough. Sometimes we can add extra sugar, and depending on your palate and health needs, you may not need it.
Nonetheless, apples are one of the world’s most popular fruits. Bring one with you to work, or chop up a couple of slices for your child’s lunchbox. Here’s a tip: Squeeze lemon juice on the apples or run a bit of cold water over them to help keep them from turning brown.
